About

S&DGC About Page

Southend & District Gun Club like a lot of clubs started with a few likeminded friends finding a common interest in this case shooting clay targets. Sadly the only founding members alive are Keith Murray and Deidre Hurst who often make an appearance on a Sunday to ensure the club remains running in the same friendly manner it was set up to be; now having just passed the half century mark Southend and District Gun Club is going strong. It is a members club but do run a few open competitions and days throughout the year.

The club is run by a committee of several very experienced shooters who are always happy to pass on any tips or explain how the various different clay shooting disciplines work.

Many people have commented on the untold amount of shooting memorabilia which has been gained through the many years of providing shooters for the England, Scotland and Canadian shooting teams as well has having many national and international accolades won by the Southend Gun Club members. We are very proud of our history at SGC and the fact that our members Keith Murray, Ray Dixson, Barry Dobbs and Nigel Barnes have all taken part in recent clay shooting events at the 2012 Olympics as range officers, referees and officials.

The grounds of Southend Gun Club are well maintained by the members and boast 2 skeet ranges one of which is used for English Skeet/Skeet Doubles the other Olympic Skeet, Automatic Ball trap (ABT) & Sporttrap. You will often find a challenging but entertaining mini sporting running in the woods. At SGC on various dates you can find:

  • English Skeet
  • Skeet Doubles
  • Olympic Skeet
  • Automatic Ball Trap
  • Sporttrap

Please see our shoot diary for what disciplines are being shot on Club shoot days.

At various times throughout the year the club run competitions some of which are open for English Sporting, English Skeet, Olympic Skeet, Sporttrap as well as some all-rounder competitions. For English, ABT and Olympic Skeet the club also run a Summer & Winter series competition but if you only want to learn or practice you don’t have to join in, there’s no pressure.

With a huge amount of experience and expertise on hand there is always someone to help out if you need a few tips but if you just want to practice your own way and enjoy a bit of banter you’ll be welcomed along.

Safety is important at any club and S&DGC are no exception. We are affiliated to the CPSA and so adopt their rules for personal protection equipment. This means that all shooters must wear hearing and eye protection at all times whilst on the range and this will be enforced. If you are safe you will be welcomed at Southend & District Gun Club.

As previously mentioned Southend & District Gun Club is a members club and so if you would like to visit the club or find out about becoming a member please contact the club via Tony Mihill on 07968476881 or email southendgunclub.co.uk
